BBM Powerful, Interactive, and future potential.

The other day Crackberry.com posted a question/poll to their readers regarding BBM.

BBM Flaunt It

CrackBerry Poll: Should RIM make BlackBerry Messenger available to non-BlackBerry smartphones?

Sure they meant well … but I suggest to think deeper. RIM, why not make BBM desktop compatible for multiple platforms: Windows XP/7, Mac OS X Leopard/Snow Leopard/Lion, and also Linux compatible. Let users on the desktop communicate, share photos/videos [small], happy faces etc … taking desktop IM to a new level and making it mobile. Apple only concentrated on Video … I’ve suggested this almost a year ago in one of my posts on this blog yet I cannot recall where though.

Maybe, just maybe RIM should expand BBM within their ranks – NOT to other platforms – to include … wait for it … a mobile website/blog. Nokia had this in beta for over yrs but it didn’t take off amongst its users; yet it was immensely powerful and interactive and live. User if allowed by the mobile site owner [you] could snap pictures remotely of your device – even setting time ranges of this allowance.

I think RIM is definitely moving in that direction. With the BBM API coming next years and apps able to integrate with BBM, I think they are moving towards BBM being an identity service/social network, rather than just chat. Making it accessible by the web seems like a natural move.

I’m hoping they bring some of the features of the PlayBook to the desktop, such as bluetooth connection of BB to desktop and having desktop access to BBM/core apps like the PlayBook can do with a BB. Posted about it here: http://www.willw.net/rim-should-bring-playbook-features-to-the-desktop/

      Hi Will,

Thank you for your comment. I believe we’re on the same page with our hopes and visions as to what BBM and PlayBook can offer , should offer. Using my desktop to control my BB is not something I’m personally after since the core features are available (PIM = Outlook/Notes, Calls = Desk Phone/Cisco/VOIP solution, Emails = Outlook/Notes, BBM has no equal & nothing compares to its innovative growth/evolution for real-time IM/Presence).

I will take a gander over at your blog – hopefully to inspire some thoughts or rebuttal on ideas … something interactively.
